New AGORA (completion by 11/30/2005)
The purpose of this blog is to keep family, friends, and all those who have and continue to have an influence on AGORA's evolution updated to the progress of this big project.
In late 2004 we took the big leep and purchased land (760 sq. meters) in downtown Fukushima in order to build a new school (photo at right). We had been renting space in a run-down building since 1996 and decided that it was time to build and own something of our own specifications. It is more of a first step, than expansion, towards establishing AGORA as Fukushima's top-notch institution for language study and cultural interaction.
This photo was taken in June. The land had to be cleared of five buildings and it took about six weeks before it returned to a 'virgin' state. Getting estimates for this job was actually quite interesting! We were originally told that the cost would be at least 16,000,000 JPY (aprox. 180,000$cdn) for the demolition including recycling and disposal of all debris. As it turned out we were getting bids from different companies and they started a bidding war among themselves. The final result left me grinning from ear to ear!
Job well done!! The enclosed area at the back with trees will be landscaped in a mediteranean style with, of course, touches of Canada. There is even a pomegrenate tree producing fruit! I will have to put my hand to making real "sirop de grenadine!" The other trees include a palm, a laurel, an very tall holly, and a sweet olive tree (osmanthus fragrans). The sandy area will be covered by a lawn and will act as a playground for the children in the mornings and a garden "pour les grands" in the afternoons (and BBQ area in the evenings!!).

SIROP DE GRENADINE:
What are the ingredients? What are the Canadian touches that you'll add to the school grounds? I really like the fact that there will be a window where the kids can look out. They need to take a break from their intensive studies and see a bit of nature.

New AGORA:
A few years ago, a friend decided to begin preparations for an International Performing Arts Academy in Los Angeles. The name of the school will change since it is all - inclusive, not merely artists will attend once the school is underway. The comprehensive educational plan sounds excellent for the world - wide edification of the students who will attend.
I studied Spanish in Ohio, although I don't speak it much any more. I read Spanish newspapers and listen and watch Spanish programming on TV. I studied French for a few years although I don't have much of an opportunity to practice what I learned, other than through some penpals on the Internet. From what I understand about the language instruction that will be given at New Agora, the students should be able to go anywhere in the world and be conversant when they finish their studies. They should be quite happy to be a part of this.

Sirop de Grenadine
From a master cocktail bartender in Fukushima here is how you make real sirop de grenadine.
1. Using a fruit press, squeeze two pomegranates to obtain 500 ml. of juice.
2. Let sit for two days and discard sediment.
3. Over low heat dissolve 500g. of white sugar into the juice.
4. 1 oz. of Cointreau liqueur and chill. Voila!

"Canadian" is roughly the same as North American when it comes to garden design. Perhaps, it is something like Vermont, Maine, NY, and the other states in the area; lots of green with a variety of trees, including maples, and a large lawn.
Also, perhaps in Canada, there is a stronger European influence with traces of English as well Mediterranean style gardens...
I knew a young lady from Alberta, Canada who visited me some years ago. I showed her some of the scenic mountains in the surrounding Los Angeles area. She brought pictures of Banff, Jasper and a few other really beautiful forest and mountain regions in Canada. I'd really like to visit there one day soon. Your school will be incredibly attractive not only for the surrounding beauty and charm of the surroundings but also for the peacefulness and attention to scholars/students. I wish that I could go back in time and maybe attend the Agora school as a student. Since that isn't the case, I'll have to live vicariously through the pictures that I see on your website.

January 8, 2006 I journeyed to the Arclight Cinema to watch Ang Lee's "BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN." The film is tightly constructed and quite well done. I hadn't seen films in a movie theater in a very long time; however, with this one, I stayed awake throughout the story development and character progression and I am pleased to say that it is definitely a worthwhile film to see; indeed, it is a "MUST SEE" film. Keith Ledger and Jake Guyllenhall do a fantastic job of acting. The theater was packed with people, luckily I bought tickets an hour before the start of the movie and I sat mid center with an unobstructed view of the screen. Hats off to "BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN," and the outstanding job of the actors and crew in helping to realize Ang Lee's vision from a script by ANNIE PROULX.
